The Challenge: Opaque Operations in a Distributed Elevator Fleet

One of our customer, manages and maintains a large fleet of elevators across numerous commercial and residential buildings. Their core challenge was the lack of real-time visibility into the operational status and health of these critical assets. While modern elevators incorporate internal diagnostics, accessing this data remotely was a significant hurdle. Many elevator control systems communicate via proprietary CAN bus protocols, often with non-standard baud rates or message IDs, making direct integration difficult. 

This reliance on manual inspections and reactive maintenance led to: 

  • Delayed Fault Detection: Minor issues often escalated into major breakdowns before technicians were dispatched. 
  • Inefficient Maintenance: Scheduled preventive maintenance was often performed unnecessarily or too late, leading to wasted resources or unexpected downtime. 
  • Prolonged Downtime: Diagnosing problems required on-site visits, extending repair times and inconveniencing building occupants. 
  • Safety Concerns: Critical safety alerts were not immediately communicated to relevant personnel. 
  • Customer Dissatisfaction: Frequent breakdowns and slow response times impacted client relationships. 

Customer recognized the urgent need for a robust elevator monitoring system to transition from reactive to predictive maintenance and enhance overall service delivery. 

The Solution: Precisol’s CAN Telematics Gateway with Custom CAN Settings

To overcome these challenges, customer partnered with us to implement a cutting-edge remote elevator diagnostics system leveraging the Precisols CAN Telematics Gateway and the PreciCloud cloud dashboard. 

The key to the solution’s success was the Precisol gateway’s advanced customization capabilities: 

  • Direct CAN Bus Integration: A Precisols CAN Telematics Gateway was installed in the control room of each elevator. The gateway was directly connected to the elevator’s internal CAN bus, allowing it to tap into the real-time operational data. 
  • Custom CAN Serial Settings: Crucially, customer’s elevators used a proprietary CAN bus implementation with non-standard baud rates. Precisol provided customization support to configure the gateway to precisely match these unique CAN serial settings, ensuring seamless and accurate data acquisition that off-the-shelf solutions couldn’t provide. 
  • Real-time Data Transmission: The gateway collected a wide array of data, including wing number, floor position, door open/close cycles, motor current, cabin position, fault codes, and ride quality parameters. This data was then securely transmitted in real-time over the cellular network to the PreciCloud cloud dashboard. 
  • Cloud-based Analytics & Visualization: The PreciCloud dashboard provided the operations team with a centralized, intuitive interface to visualize the real-time status of their entire elevator fleet. Trend analysis, performance metrics, and historical data were readily available. 
  • Instant Push Notifications: For critical events, the system was configured to send immediate push notifications in Precisol’s PreciView mobile application to maintenance technicians and dispatchers. This ensured that alerts for faults, emergency stops, or abnormal operations were received instantly, enabling rapid response. 

Results: Unprecedented Uptime and Proactive Service

The deployment of the Precisol’s CAN Telematics Gateway and PreciCloud dashboard delivered immediate and transformative benefits for the customer: 

  • Accelerated Fault Detection & Resolution: Real-time fault codes and operational data allowed customer to diagnose issues remotely, often before occupants even noticed a problem. This drastically reduced troubleshooting time and enabled technicians to arrive on-site with the correct tools and parts. 
  • True Predictive Maintenance: By analysing trends in motor current, door cycles, and vibration data, customer could predict potential component failures. This allowed them to schedule maintenance proactively during off-peak hours, preventing costly unplanned breakdowns. 
  • Enhanced Safety & Reliability: Immediate alerts for safety-critical events ensured rapid response, improving passenger safety. The overall reliability of the elevator fleet significantly increased. 
  • Improved Operational Efficiency: Reduced downtime, optimized maintenance schedules, and fewer manual inspections led to substantial cost savings in labour and resources. 
  • Superior Customer Satisfaction: Fewer breakdowns and faster resolution times translated directly into happier building owners and occupants, strengthening customer’s reputation. 
  • Leveraging Legacy Assets: The ability to integrate with proprietary, non-standard CAN settings meant customer could modernize its monitoring without replacing its existing, expensive elevator control systems.
