- RS485 Modbus Read Input:
- The gateway connects directly to the RS485 port of Modbus-enabled devices (PLCs, sensors, meters).
- It acts as a Modbus RTU master, continuously polling specified input registers (e.g., temperature, pressure, flow rates) and holding registers (e.g., motor status, alarm flags).
- This raw data is then translated into cloud-friendly protocols like MQTT or HTTP/S (JSON payloads) and securely transmitted via its integrated LTE cellular modem to a central cloud platform. This provides real-time industrial data acquisition.
- Modbus Write Output with Edge Intelligence:
- Beyond just reading data, the Precisol’s gateway can write values to Modbus output registers (e.g., coils, holding registers) on the connected PLCs or devices.
- Edge intelligence allows this write functionality to be driven by pre-programmed logic within the gateway itself. For example, if a local sensor connected to the modbus device (value read from a Modbus input) exceeds a certain threshold, the gateway can autonomously trigger a Modbus write command to turn on a fan, activate an alarm, or adjust a local setpoint. This enables localized, rapid responses even if the cloud connection is temporarily lost. This is crucial for critical, low-latency control actions.
- Cloud-Based Write Control:
- The Precisol’s gateway also facilitates cloud-based write control. Commands initiated from a central cloud dashboard or application (e.g., a user clicking a “Start Pump” button, or an AI algorithm optimizing a setpoint) are securely transmitted down to the gateway.
- The gateway receives these commands via its cloud protocol (e.g., an MQTT message on a specific control topic).
- It then translates this cloud command into the appropriate Modbus RTU write command and sends it to the target PLC or device over RS485, executing the remote-control action. This provides centralized oversight and control for distributed assets.
